Chernobyl and hope
33 years after the disaster in Chernobyl, a Christmas tree was put up there for the first time this year. A symbol of the hope of being able to live here again.
Organized by the Association of Chernobyl Tour Operators, former residents put up a Christmas tree in Pripyat for the first time. In 1986, Pripyat was an up-and-coming city in which many families shaped the cityscape. The city became uninhabitable after the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986.
The tree was decorated with family photos and clocks. These are intended as a reminder that time is always ticking and that the city will come to life again – over time.
